Discover Umai Chicago

Located at Umai Chicago, 730 S Clark St, Chicago, IL 60605, this charming restaurant offers a unique dining experience that blends traditional flavors with a contemporary twist. Whether you're in the mood for fresh sushi, sizzling grilled meats, or flavorful appetizers, Umai delivers on all fronts. The atmosphere is welcoming, with a cozy yet modern vibe that makes it a perfect spot for both casual dinners and special occasions.

Upon walking in, you're immediately greeted by the enticing aroma of sizzling dishes and the sight of vibrant sushi platters. The menu at Umai is a true celebration of Japanese cuisine, with a diverse range of options that cater to various tastes and dietary preferences. Whether you’re a sushi enthusiast or someone looking for heartier fare, the variety here is impressive.

One standout feature of Umai Chicago is their sushi selection. Each piece is meticulously crafted using the freshest ingredients, which is evident in every bite. The rolls, like the Rainbow Roll or the Spicy Tuna Roll, are packed with flavor and creativity. What makes their sushi unique is the blend of textures and flavors - from the delicate fish to the crunchy tempura bits and creamy avocado. It's a balance of simplicity and elegance that shows the chefs’ attention to detail.

But it’s not just sushi that steals the spotlight. The grilled options at Umai are equally mouthwatering. The yakitori skewers, for example, are grilled to perfection with a smoky char and glazed with a savory sauce that brings out the best in each piece of chicken, beef, or vegetables. It's the kind of dish that has you coming back for more, as the flavors linger long after the meal is over.

Another aspect worth mentioning is the variety of appetizers and side dishes. The Edamame and Gyoza are crowd-pleasers, offering the right balance of savory and crispy, making them the perfect start to any meal. The miso soup, too, is comforting and light, with a flavor profile that pairs well with nearly every dish on the menu.

For those who appreciate a more interactive dining experience, Umai Chicago also offers hot pots and Japanese-style barbecue, where you can cook your own meats and vegetables right at the table. This adds a fun, hands-on element to the meal and is perfect for groups or families looking to enjoy a meal together. The staff is incredibly helpful, guiding you through the process and ensuring that everything is cooked just right.

The service at Umai is another key highlight. The staff is attentive and knowledgeable, always ready to recommend dishes or provide insight into the ingredients and preparation methods. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular, the friendly atmosphere makes the dining experience all the more enjoyable.

One of the best aspects of Umai is its location. Nestled in the heart of the South Loop, it’s the perfect spot for locals and tourists alike. Whether you’re heading to a nearby museum or enjoying a day out in Chicago, stopping by Umai for a meal is a great way to refuel. The location also provides ample parking and is easy to find, making it a convenient choice for those in the area.

What truly sets Umai Chicago apart, though, is its commitment to quality. Every dish on the menu reflects the restaurant’s dedication to providing an authentic yet innovative experience. From the presentation to the flavors, each element is thoughtfully executed, making it clear that the chefs care deeply about their craft.

If you’re planning to visit, be sure to check out their seasonal specials, which feature unique dishes that reflect the freshest ingredients available. These specials offer something new and exciting for returning customers, ensuring that every visit feels like a fresh experience.

Overall, Umai Chicago is a standout in the city’s vibrant culinary scene. • Umai is a hidden gem in Chicago! The atmosphere is sleek yet relaxed — perfect for a dinner date, night out with friends, or solo sushi fix. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. I tried a variety of sashimi, and every single one was fresh, beautifully plated, and full of flavor. The fish was high quality and melted in my mouth. Prices are reasonable for the quality you get, and they have a great drink selection too. Umai definitely earns a spot on my go-to list for sushi in Chicago.

  • My husband and I went here for the first time Friday night, our first time in Chicago. It was so good that despite all the restaurants in the are, we went back Saturday. Food was delicious, service was great.

  • The food was good. Ordered the sushi omakase but the server could have explained which each piece was.

  • Came here on Memorial Day with a group of 6 and they got us in within 20 minutes, which was pretty solid. Saw their chef special had mentaiko ramen and umi—unfortunately, they were out of the umi, which kinda sucked. But the ramen? So good. Super creamy and rich—if you’re into carbonara vibes or pasta dishes, you’ll definitely like this one. Not sure how long it’ll be on the menu though. I also got the yuzu sour. It was alright—tasted a bit watered down, but it still hit.

  • I walked in at 5 and got a table immediately but the restaurant filled up quickly. I got the mexicana roll and a half roll of surf and turf. Both were melt in mouth amazing. The lychee martini was also very tasty. The staff was very nice. Looking forward to my next visit.
